Healthy Human Foods for Your Pomsky Dog

There are many human foods that provide nutrients and benefits to dogs. Specific foods may contain antioxidants, fiber, or vitamins that can boost your pomsky’s immune system, increase energy levels or enhance their skin and fur coat. As always, consult with your veterinarian before making any major changes to your dog’s diet. This post provides a variety of human foods that have benefits and nutrients to support your dog’s health.

The Orange Ones – These orange vegetables include vitamins and nutrients for your pomsky:

  • Pumpkin Puree

Pumpkin puree contains a high amount of Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene) which is great for eye and skin health in dogs. Pumpkins have both Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which boost your dog’s immune system.  Additionally, the high levels of fiber and extra moisture found in pumpkin puree leads to increased digestive health and hydration for your dog.

  • Carrots

The antioxidant Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene) is also found in carrots. This antioxidant supports your dog’s eye health, boosts their immune system, and contributes to healthy skin and fur coat. Carrots are high in fiber, which is good for your dog’s digestive system. Chewing carrots is a great way to support your dog’s dental and gum health. We recommend you slightly cook carrots first to enhance their flavor, then freeze them. Or you can include carrots in a dog treat recipe, such as our recipe for Cheesy Carrot and Oatmeal Treats for Dogs or Soft Pretzel Dog Treats.

  • Sweet Potatoes

Similar to pumpkins and carrots, sweet potatoes contain Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene) which enhances your dog’s skin and fur coat and is essential for your dog’s vision and bone health. Sweet potatoes are high in fiber, which keeps your dog’s digestive system healthy and regular. Sweet potatoes also have a variety of additional nutrients including calcium, potassium, and iron, which all support your dog’s health. Sweet potatoes can be used to make a variety of dog treats including Bite Size Cookies and Sweet Potato Peanut Butter Donuts.

Let’s “Meat” Up – Your dog will love having fresh meats:

  • Salmon

Salmon is known for being a good source of protein with Omega-3 Fatty Acids which can help reduce inflammation and boost your dog’s immune system. Omega-3 Fatty Acids also contribute to a smooth and shiny fur coat, which is ideal for pomskies. Salmon is a super food that contains great nutrients; however, it should only be fed to your dog 1-2 times per week and it must be free of any seasonings and can only be canned in water. The salmon you feed your dog must be high quality meat to ensure it is free of parasites and free of any fish bones.

  • Chicken

Chicken is a more affordable lean protein that will give your pomsky essential energy. Chicken contains Omega 6 fatty acids which contribute to healthy skin and shiny fur coats. Chicken also has the amino acid glucosamine, which helps promote bone health.

“Berry” Good – These types of berries all have excellent health benefits. Feed all berries in moderation, as the fiber can sometimes upset your dog’s stomach:

  • Strawberries

Strawberries contain high amounts of Vitamin C and fiber. Vitamin C can reduce inflammation and reduce the effects of aging brain cells in dogs. Strawberries have a variety of other vitamins and nutrients including vitamin K, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, potassium and magnesium. Strawberries have an enzyme that may help whiten your pomsky’s teeth as they eat it.  Strawberries were used in our Frozen Strawberry Coconut Treats and Strawberry and Apple Frozen Dog Treats.

  • Blueberries

Blueberries are high in fiber and Vitamin C which are important to include in your dog’s diet. Additionally, blueberries have antioxidants that protect cells in your dog’s body, including reducing the effects of aging brain cells. Treat your pomsky with these Mini Blueberry Muffins.

  • Cranberries

Cranberries have Vitamin C which helps boost your dog’s immune system. Cranberries can prevent UTI problems in dogs and they have antioxidants which will help prevent or fight oxidative stress. Dried cranberries were used in our recipes for Cranberry Heart Dog Treats and Cranberry and Oat Energy Bites.

Serve it by the Spoonful – These food items can easily be spread on lick mats or added to food bowls:

  • Peanut butter

Peanut butter is a great protein source to provide your pomsky with essential energy. Peanut butter contains vitamin E, which may boost your dog’s immune system and prevent them from getting sick. Vitamin B is found in peanut butter and provides nutrients to keep your dog’s fur coat healthy and shiny. Sweet Potato Peanut Butter Donuts are a great way to add peanut butter to your dog’s diet.

  • Yogurt

Greek yogurt has probiotics that can increase your pomsky’s gut health. It is high in protein and calcium as well. When choosing yogurt for your dog, make sure it is plain and free of sugar, xylitol and any other types of sweeteners as these can be harmful if your dog eats them. We have recipes for Apple and Yogurt Frozen Treats and Strawberry and Apple Frozen Dog Treats.

  • Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can provide benefits for your dog including easing inflammation and fighting harmful bacteria. It can also keep your dog’s skin and fur coat smooth and glossy. Coconut oil is high in fat, so only add small amounts to your dog’s diet and always consult your veterinarian if you have questions.

Additional Foods:

  • Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a healthy carbohydrate that can be added to your pomsky’s diet to maintain healthy skin. Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which is known to regulate your dog’s digestive system and regulate your dog’s blood glucose levels. Another important nutrient in oatmeal is pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), which helps your dog’s body convert fats, carbohydrates, and protein into forms of energy. Some of our recipes with oatmeal are Cranberry Heart Dog Treats, Mini Blueberry Muffins for Dogs, Cranberry and Oat Energy Bites, and Cheesy Carrot and Oatmeal Treats for Dogs.

  • Green Peas

Peas contain an antioxidant called lutein, which supports your dog’s eyes, heart and skin. Green peas are high in fiber which helps lower cholesterol and keep your pomsky at a healthy weight. Peas also have several vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and vitamin K. Our recipe for Christmas Tree Cookies includes green peas and the cookies can be shaped differently so they are good for any occasion.
