Cranberry Heart Dog Treats

This dog treat recipe is perfect for Valentine’s Day and these chewy treats can be used for positive reinforcement dog training. The recipe includes dried cranberries which are known to provide antioxidants, vitamin C and may prevent urinary tract problems in dogs.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Old-Fashioned Oats

  • ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda

  • ½ Cup Sugar Free All-Natural Applesauce

  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil

  • 1 Large Egg

  • ¾ Cup Unsweetened Craisins or Dried Cranberries

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Blend 2 cups of Old-Fashioned Oats in a food processor or blender to create a flour texture.

  3. Mix blended oat flour and baking soda in a medium mixing bowl.

  4. In a separate bowl using a stand mixer or hand mixer, combine applesauce, coconut oil, and egg until fully blended.

  5. Slowly add the flour and baking soda mixture into the wet ingredients and stir until fully combined.

  6. Add the dried cranberries and mix to form a dough.

  7. Once the dough is formed, you can choose to roll the dough into small balls to make cookies or cut out shapes.

If you choose to cut out shapes, one of the following methods will work best for you:

    • Hold the cookie cutter flat in the palm of your hand. Fill the cookie cutter with dough, pushing dough into the cutter until the top is flat and level, then place the cutter on the cookie sheet and push the dough out of the cookie cutter onto the parchment paper. Repeat for each cookie cut out.

*This is the method we use when the dough is extra wet and does not roll out easily.

    • Flour a cutting board with whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour. Roll the dough out until it is about ½ inch thick. Cut out cookie shapes and transfer them to the parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Gather the leftover dough and repeat this process until you have used up all the dough.

  8. Place all cookie balls or shapes onto the parchment lined baking sheet ½ inch to 1 inch apart. These treats will not spread so they can be placed close to each other.

  9. Bake at 350° F for 15 minutes.

  10. Remove the treats from the oven and transfer to a wire rack.

  11. Once completely cooled, give your dog a healthy treat to enjoy!
