Pomsky Puppies: Top 10 Facts You Need to Know Before You Buy

Pomskies are small, fluffy and cute, which makes many dog lovers want to share their home with one. However, they are a new breed so you may want to learn more about them before choosing a puppy to take home. Here at the Pomsky Dog Blog we have compiled the top 10 things you should know before adopting a pomsky.

 1.  Pomskies Have a Lot of Energy

Pomskies are cute and full of energy. They love to run, jump, dig, and play fetch. This dog breed will likely require about 30 minutes of exercise a day. A great way to release their energy is to take them on 2-3 walks per day, play fetch, and provide them with a variety of toys including puzzle toys and chewing toys. If a Pomsky is not exercised, they may become bored, which can result in destructive behaviors such as chewing on items in the home.

2.      They get along better with Adults

Due to the pomsky’s high energy level, they often get along better with adults who can play fetch and give them toys and treats. Pomskies are curious and sometimes crawl on top of people, sniff them, or lick them. When playing, pomsky puppies may bite which may be alarming to children or older adults who are not expecting it. This is something that can be worked on in training.

3.      Pomskies May be Vocal

Pomeranians are known for making small “yipping” noises and huskies can produce a howl or bark. Therefore, Pomskies can be vocal when they are put in their kennel, during car rides, when they want a treat or various other reasons. Each pomsky is different so it will depend on their personality.

4.      Find a Trusted Breeder

Make sure you find a local breeder that uses humane breeding methods. They should not allow the same dogs to breed multiple times, and they should not allow you to take a puppy home before they are 8-10 weeks old. Be sure to ask a lot of questions and visit the puppy you plan on adopting before you take them home. Check out our post about finding a reputable breeder.

5.      Fur, Fur, Fur – Everywhere!

Just like huskies, pomskies shed their coat twice a year. Depending on their coat, the pomsky may have a lot of fluffy fur (plush or wooly coat) or they may have shorter fur (standard coat). Either way, they will shed their fur and it will be on your clothing and furniture.

6.      Pomskies are very Affectionate and Love Attention

Pomskies love to spend time with their owners. They like to sit next to you while watching tv and may follow you around the house. Depending on your pomsky, they may love belly rubs, cuddling on the couch, getting brushed, and even swimming with you.

7.      Owners Must Be Ready to Train

It is important that the owner show authority when training their pomsky. Because pomskies are affectionate, they want to be involved in all of your activities, including those that they should not be a part of (eating meals, doing laundry, gardening). Pomskies are very smart and will quickly learn basic commands such as sit, lay down, leave it, and come here. 8.      You Will Get Compliments Everywhere You Go

Pomskies are still a relatively new breed, and many people think they are cute due to their fluffy coat and smaller size. You will likely receive several compliments when you go on walks and people might ask you what type of dog you have.

9.      Size Can Vary

A pomsky’s size depends on their parents’ sizes. They will typically range between 15-30 pounds once full grown. It is easier to predict the pomsky’s size if both their mom and dad are pomskies (rather than a husky and Pomeranian).

10.   They Love Colder Climates

Pomskies love playing in the snow. They like to run, play fetch and dig holes in the snow. Pomskies can tolerate outside temperatures between 0 - 80° F, but prefer the moderate cold temperatures (20 - 50° F). If the pomsky is playing and running on a hot summer day, they will require a lot of water, breaks in the shade, and possibly a cooling vest. Check out our tips for staying cool in the summer.
