Finding a Pomsky Breeder

Once you have determined that a pomsky is the right dog for you, you will need to find a reputable breeder. Make sure you avoid pomsky puppy scams by finding a reputable pomsky breeder. A trustworthy pomsky breeder will treat their pomskies like family members and put the dogs’ health first and foremost. They will avoid breeding the same dogs multiple times, will not allow puppies to go home before 8 weeks old, and will likely Embark DNA test their dogs to check for health conditions. Pomsky Puppy: Birth to 8 weeks

  • First 2 weeks: When a pomsky puppy is welcomed into this world, they will need to spend quality time with their mom and siblings. A newborn pomsky puppy will stay close to their mom for warmth and milk. Newborn puppies are not aware of their surroundings and don’t open their eyes until they are around 7-14 days old.

  • 3-4 weeks old: Around 3-4 weeks old, pomsky puppies will start responding to their environment by whining and yelping. They will start crawling and wagging their tail. Towards the end of 4 weeks old, pomsky puppies will start running around on all four legs, playing and pouncing with their litter mates.

  • 5-7 weeks old: Between 5-7 weeks old pomsky puppies continue to learn about the world around them, including socializing with people, walking outside, and exploring the home. Their diet progresses from their mother’s milk for the first 3 weeks, to soft wet food, to eating regular puppy food by 8 weeks.

  • 8 weeks old: A pomsky puppy is ready to go home to their new owners at 8 weeks old. They will be able to walk on a leash but will still require training and socialization with their new owners.

Pomsky Puppy Vaccinations

A pomsky breeder should bring pomsky puppies in for their first round of vaccinations between 6-8 weeks old. Then the new owner will need to schedule their pomsky’s veterinarian appointments to receive the remaining necessary vaccines. A typical puppy vaccination schedule requires multiple visits to the vet including the first vaccines at 6-8 weeks (while they are still with their breeder), then another dose around 9-12 weeks, 16-18 weeks and between 12-16 months of age. In addition to these vaccines, your dog will need to be spayed or neutered typically by 6 months old, and then have annual check ups to stay up to date on their vaccines.

Pomsky Puppy Appearance

A newborn pomsky will weigh between 1-2 pounds and will fit in the palm of your hand (although they should not be held at this young age). They will quickly grow and develop over their first weeks of life.

A pomsky’s coat color and pattern when they are born might change slightly as they grow and develop. Some pomsky puppies are born with a dark husky mask around their eyes, but as they become full grown, the color is not as intense. Be sure to ask your breeder if they have any pictures of this type of pattern and coat on a full grown pomsky so you know what to expect.

A pomsky’s eyes can be brown, blue, parti (multicolored eye) or bi-eyed (each eye is a different color). They may also have amber or green eyes, however these eye colors are less common. A pomsky’s eyes will begin turning color towards their adult color around 4 weeks, but it can take up to 12 weeks to fully determine what color an adult pomsky’s eye will look like.

Bringing a Pomsky Puppy Home

It is so exciting when you can finally bring your 8-week-old pomsky puppy home.

  • The ride home:  Make sure you have a safe place for your pomsky to stay in the car on your way home. It is best to have an enclosed place that your puppy will be comfortable, such as a crate with a blanket.

  • First time in your home: Prepare your home for your pomsky by placing everything low to the ground out of reach. Make sure there aren’t any exposed cords that your pomsky could get to. When you first introduce your pomsky to your home, let them run around and explore so they know where they will be living. Then you can set boundaries, so your pomsky is only able to play in a small area where you are able to supervise them. Read our post about Setting Boundaries for a Pomsky to train your pomsky to stay in certain areas of the home, and out of other areas.

  • Getting into a routine:  Establish a routine with your pomsky puppy including when you go on walks, when they eat, when you take them out potty, playtime and bedtime. Having a routine from the very beginning will help your pomsky know what to expect, and will reduce their anxiety. Start potty training your pomsky right away when you first bring them home and use soft natural treats to reward them.

*** Your pomsky breeder and local veterinarian will be great resources when you have questions or concerns about caring for your pomsky.

Summary

Pomsky puppies begin exploring their world around 5 weeks old, and they only become more curious and intelligent as they grow and develop. Pomskies typically go home to their new owners around 8 weeks old, when it becomes the new owner’s responsibility to stay up to date on all puppy vaccinations. Whether you have already had a puppy or this is your first experience with a puppy, make sure you establish a routine and set boundaries so your pomsky puppy knows what to expect.
