Car Ride Home

Today is the day that you finally get to bring your pomsky home! We are so excited for you to start this adventure. Have a plan for where your pomsky will stay in the car during the ride home. The best place for your dog during a car ride is in a crate. Your puppy will likely want to be with you in your lap, however, a crate is the safest option. Provide treats and toys to keep your new puppy busy. Read more about safe travels with your pomsky in our Car Rides with Your Dog – Pomsky Training post.

Pomsky Proofing the Living Room

In the Living Room your pomsky may want to play with cords, remotes, or other items that would be fun to chew, dig at, or tug on. Make sure items on tables are out of reach or would be okay for your puppy to temporarily have before you train them to “leave it”. For example, we do not recommend you keep food items, breakable decorations, plants, or cleaning supplies on tables that your pomsky could access. If you typically keep remotes and magazines out this is okay, your pomsky will not be at risk of injury or harm if they take these items. Tuck cords away as much as possible, as these can sometimes be enticing for a puppy to chew on. Also, keep your shoes in a closet or closed container so your puppy is not tempted to chew on these. Once you start training, your pomsky will learn the boundaries of what they can and cannot play with.

Pomsky Proofing the Kitchen/Dining Room

Pomskies are super cute and curious. They may learn where you keep certain food items and try to nudge the cupboard open with their nose. Be mindful of where your puppy is in your home and if they are in the kitchen, keep a close eye on them to ensure they are not getting into cupboards and foods they should not be having. We recommend you have magnetic closures on your cupboards to ensure they close completely and are not easily opened. Also, when you have food on the counter or table push it toward the middle. This way your pomsky won’t be able to lick the plate by sticking their head up to the table.

Pomsky Proofing the Bathroom

Similar to the kitchen cupboards, confirm that your bathroom cabinets all close tightly. It is important that the cabinets with any cleaning supplies are especially monitored and closed well. It may be helpful to keep the bathroom door closed while you are in the process of training your pomsky. This will prevent them from sniffing around in the bathtub/shower, around the toilet, in shelves or cabinets. We have experienced pomskies who like to unroll toilet paper and that results in a big mess to clean up!

 Pomsky Proofing the Bedroom

Will your pomsky stay in your bedroom at night? If so, the bedroom will also need to be pomsky-proofed. Make sure that cords are secured or tucked away and nightstands have puppy friendly items. Your pomsky might be interested in playing with your blankets, pillows, or laundry. Monitor your puppy and if you think they will get into trouble while you are sleeping, keep them in a crate or kennel. This will help you sleep at night and ensure your pomsky is safe.

Pomsky Proofing the Yard/Outdoor Space

Pomskies are curious and playful. Remove sharp objects in or around your yard that your pomsky could step on. Use only dog friendly lawn care and pest repellent. Watch your puppy closely while you are playing outside in the yard. They might try to eat plants, bugs, or other debris in the yard that are not safe or recommended for dogs.

If you are preparing food outdoors, keep your pomsky away from the hot grill or oven. They will smell the delicious food you are cooking and want to get as close as possible to the source.

Where will your Pomsky stay during the day?

If you leave to go to work or run errands, your pomsky should have a puppy-proofed place to stay. This could be a laundry room, bedroom, or in their crate. We recommend a room, so your dog can play with toys and release energy throughout the day when you are not home. A crate will limit your pomsky’s ability to play. Make sure the room you keep your pomsky in has minimal items that your pomsky could chew on, dig at, knock over, or eat. Similar to the other rooms, secure all cupboards, remove breakable items, and secure all cords.

Summary

Each pomsky is different and will be enticed by different items around the home. Keep a close watch on your dog to ensure they are playing with only safe toys and not getting into trouble. After some time, your pomsky will learn the boundaries of the home and learn fun and safe ways to stay busy.
