Car Rides with Your Dog – Pomsky Training
This post includes where to keep your pomsky during car rides, what to bring, and other considerations to ensure your pomsky is comfortable. It is important you have the right supplies to keep your puppy comfortable and stress free during your travel adventures.
Keep Your Pomsky in a Carrier or Crate
When you are taking your pomsky for a car ride, the safest place for them to stay is in a carrier or a crate. A carrier is lighter weight than a crate but both options keep your dog contained in a space. Some owners may use a dog booster seat or safety harness. We do not recommend these, as they do not protect your dog in the event of a car crash.
Location of Crate
Place the carrier or crate on a flat surface that it is not likely to slide around. This could be on the floor of a vehicle or secured in the back seat of the car. You can use a strap to keep the carrier in place – this will also reduce the likelihood of your pomsky getting motion sickness.
Keep the crate in a location where a passenger can reach the pomsky. This will allow you to provide treats and toys throughout the car ride. Your pomsky will feel more comfortable knowing that you are within reach.
What to bring?
Blanket or Bed: Place this inside of the crate to keep your pomsky comfortable and make the floor of the crate less slippery. The smell of the bed or blanket will comfort your pomsky and make them feel right at home. If you use the same blanket or bed each time you ride in the car your pomsky will begin to make this association.
Toys: Find a small toy that will keep your dog busy. We recommend using a nylon chewing bone, rubber ball, or KONG classic toy.
Treats: Bring treats to reward your puppy for staying quiet and calm. Place treats inside of toys such as the KONG classic toy or KONG Goodie Bone to keep your puppy busy during the car ride. It is always great to keep treats around to help your pomsky listen to your commands and receive positive reinforcement for good behavior.
Leash, Harness, Collar: Don’t forget to bring your dog’s leash and harness or collar. These will be necessary to use when you stop for potty breaks and once you arrive at your destination.
Other Considerations:
Sunlight: Make sure your pomsky doesn’t have to sit in the direct sunlight during the car ride. Place a lightweight blanket over the carrier to provide shade or use a window sun shade to protect your pup from the sun’s heat or brightness.
Temperature: Face air vents toward your pomsky to ensure they aren’t getting too warm during summer car rides. In the winter months your pomsky will enjoy a cold car ride. Open the window to provide a nice breeze.
Wear your pomsky out first: Make sure to walk your puppy and play with them before going for a car ride. Your pomsky will use the car ride as naptime if they have received enough exercise and mental stimulation before getting in the car.
Stop every 2 hours: Try to stop every 2 hours to let your pomsky stretch their legs and go potty. Stop more often for small puppies (less than 6 months old) to prevent accidents from occurring.
Summary
If you follow these tips, you should have a successful car ride with your pomsky. Your puppy will be comfortable and ready for the next adventure. Many pomsky owners agree that pomskies are the best travel companions.
