Why is it Important to Prevent Dog Boredom?
When a pomsky dog is bored, this can result in them being unhappy. They might find negative ways to entertain themselves, including engaging in destructive behaviors such as digging or chewing on items that they should not be chewing on. When you see your dog perform a negative behavior or when you come home to a chewed up item, you will likely be upset, however your dog was just searching for ways to release energy and entertain themselves. Keep reading to learn how to turn these negative experiences into positive interactions between pomsky dogs and their owners.
Signs of Pomsky Dog Boredom
Some common signs that your dog is bored include being restless or pacing, following you around or sitting on your lap, whining, or barking. They might also engage in destructive behaviors such as attempting to dig on furniture or the carpet, stealing an item and wanting you to chase after them, or chewing on items that are not toys such as a remote, pillow, or shoes. Pomsky dogs often have separation anxiety, so they might engage in some of the behaviors such as following you or sitting on your lap to stay close to you, but if they become destructive while you are near them, they are likely bored. Another common sign that your pomsky dog is bored is if you come home to a mess your dog made.
Ways to Prevent Pomsky Dog Boredom
Physical Exercise
Pomsky dogs require at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, with a range of 45-75 minutes of exercise being the most optimal. You can give your dog opportunities to exercise by going for a walk or run, playing fetch or playing tug of war. When going for a walk, occasionally change your route or alternate between walking and running with your pomsky dog. If you slightly change your walking pace or location, it will use more of your pomsky dog’s energy to anticipate what will happen next and explore new areas. Pomsky dogs love to play fetch with a variety of different toys and textures such as plush toys, rope toys, frisbees or balls.
Brain Teasers and Mental Stimulation for Dogs
Keep your pomsky dog entertained with activities that require them to use problem solving skills.
Puzzle toys are a great way to entertain your pomsky by having them slide, twist, or open compartments to find food and treats. When choosing a puzzle toy, make sure you choose one that is durable, can be washed and is a good level of difficulty for your dog. Check out our Puzzle Toys for Pomsky Dog post to find the best puzzle toy for your dog.
Snuffle mats require your pomsky dog to sniff out dog food or treats, in a way very similar to the way wild animals sniff for food in the grass. We do not recommend leaving your pomsky dog home alone with a snuffle mat, however, because they might attempt to rip it apart or even eat the pieces of fabric.
Another mental stimulation option for pomsky dogs includes hiding treats inside the house then having your pomsky dog sniff them out. You can hide just the treats or place each treat inside of a plastic egg and have your dog go on an egg hunt. Pomskies are typically highly motivated by treats and will enjoy searching for treats, popping the egg open and eating the treat. This activity also provides your pomsky exercise, especially if you hide treats upstairs and downstairs.
Extend Feeding Time
Instead of giving your pomsky dog a bowl of food, extend the time it takes them to eat their meal by putting their food in a puzzle toy, snuffle mat, on a lick mat or frozen in a toy.
Lick mats satisfy your dog’s need to lick and extend their feeding time when eating food and treats. You can spread peanut butter, dog-friendly Greek yogurt, or apple sauce on a lick mat, then top it with dog food or sprinkle it with treats or shredded cheese.
Fill a rubber toy such as a KONG classic with food, some treats, peanut butter, or something else your dog enjoys, then fill with water and place in the freezer for 4 hours or until solid. You dog will love this fun treat and it will keep them entertained as they eat their food and treats.
Rotate Your Pomsky Dog’s Toy
If your pomsky dog has toys available, but is choosing not to play with them, they are likely in need of a toy rotation. Rotate your dog’s toys every week to prevent your dog from getting bored and keep their playtime exciting. We recommend having a variety of toy types when you rotate, such as switching out Nylon Bones, Puzzle Toys, and fetch toys. If you want to learn how to rotate toys on a set schedule, check out our How to Rotate Your Pomsky Dog’s Toys post.
Training
Incorporate training into your daily routines. Simple actions such as having your pomsky dog sit before hooking them up to their leash, having them shake before receiving a treat, or having them wait before eating food are ways to incorporate training into daily routines. Your dog will need to demonstrate their knowledge of the command, and channel their energy into focusing on what they have learned.
Training a pomsky dog is a lifelong experience and there are always new skills your dog can learn. If you feel like you have taught your dog all of the commands, check out our How to Train a Pomsky Dog post to find more ideas of skills to teach and “party tricks” that are not always necessary, but fun tricks.
Daily Routines
Have a predictable routine for common activities such as when you wake up, go for walks and mealtimes. Pomsky dogs benefit from having predictable routines and this can help prevent them from engaging in negative behaviors because they will know when they will have the opportunity to go outside, play, or eat.
Summary
Pomsky Dogs have a lot of energy and they need productive ways to release this energy to prevent them from being bored. Always remember, although you might be tired at the end of the workday, your dog has likely been waiting all day to go for a walk or play with you so be sure to include these activities in your routine.
