Outdoor Winter Activities with Your Dog

Hiking

Pomskies love playing in the snow and enjoy going on winter hikes. Enjoy the cool crisp air of winter by hiking with your dog. Hiking in the winter provides different views of nature, you will be able to see further into the distance and hear animals walking through the snow. Be cautious of hiking near bodies of water (e.g. lakes, ponds, rivers, etc.) so you don’t accidently slip on the ice or fall through the ice.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is becoming a more popular sport and it can be a great outdoor winter activity to do with your dog. Always check the weather before you go to ensure it will be a good temperature and you won’t get unexpected snowfall. When deciding where to go snowshoeing, consider your pomsky dog’s fitness level and how far they can walk before they will become tired. Also, ensure you have found a winter hiking trail that is dog friendly and cleared off enough for your pomsky to walk comfortably without sinking into the deep snow. Prepare for your winter hike by packing your dog’s travel water bottle, training treats for your pomsky, poop bags, and dog booties or paw balm to protect your pomsky’s paws from the cold frozen snow. Always clean up after your dog goes potty, even in the snow.

Snowball Fight

Pomsky dogs love playing in the snow and will enjoy a snowball fight. Make sure the snow you are playing with is clean, then have fun tossing snow in the air and letting your pomsky dog jump around and try to catch it.

Dog Friendly Shopping

Explore dog friendly stores such as pet stores or outdoor malls. This is a great opportunity for your dog to have social interactions with other people or dogs in the winter months. Be sure to bring paw wipes and dog booties to protect your pomsky dog’s paws from rough pavement, winter salts and ice melts that might be in the parking lots.

Indoor Activities for Your Pomsky Dog

Hide and Seek

One of the best ways to entertain your pomsky dog inside is to hide treats and toys around the house and have them go find them. One of the easiest ways to hide treats is to put them in plastic eggs and hide the eggs throughout your house so your dog can find them. Count how many eggs you have hidden, and then you can be sure your dog has found all the treats once you have the right amount of empty plastic eggs. You can also hide just treats or toys, but make sure you count how many you hid and ensure your dog has found all of them.

Fetch

A classic game of fetch can be a good way to keep your pomsky dog entertained inside. Change your typical game of fetch by throwing the toy down the stairs, or my playing “pomsky in the middle” and throwing the toy between two people and having your dog attempt to get it.

Learn a New Skill

Teach your pomsky dog a new skill or practice commands your dog already knows. Daily training sessions provide many benefits to your pomsky dog including mental exercise, it keeps their skills sharp and gives you the opportunity to bond with your dog.

Baking Treats

Make some fresh dog treats with one of our Healthy Dog Recipes. You can buy a variety of treat molds to make paw shaped treats, heart treats, bone shaped treats or even dog donuts. It is great to make homemade dog treats because you know exactly which healthy ingredients are going into your dog’s treats.

Dog Play Date

Invite a friend, family member or neighbor to bring their dog over for a doggie play date. This is a great opportunity for your dog to socialize with other people and dogs in the winter months.

*Pro Tip: Greet your guest and their dog outside your home so both dogs can meet in a neutral location and have the opportunity to sniff each other.

Indoor Dog Parks

Are there any indoor dog parks near you? Most indoor dog parks require dogs to be registered, be spayed or neutered, and have proof that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. Indoor dog parks are similar to outdoor dog parks, and they allow dogs to socialize and play inside when the weather is not ideal outside. You can also check if your local boarding facility or veterinarian offers dog events and activities.

Important Considerations

In the winter months, it is important to keep your dog healthy and active even if it is dark and cold outside.

Some key things to remember:

  • Use a light up collar or reflective gear when you take your pomsky dog outside in the dark.

  • Take care of your dog’s paws by using paw balm, booties and wipes.

  • Provide enrichment activities inside through puzzle toys, fetch, hide and seek and snuffle mats.

  • Monitor your dog’s skin and seek advice from your veterinarian for supplements if your dog is itching frequently due to dry or itchy skin.

  • Give your pomsky opportunities to socialize with other people and dogs when you go on walks, or through other activities indoors or outdoors.

  • When it snows… play in the snow with your pomsky - They will love it!
