Northern California Pomskies

“Responsible breeding, responsible ownership”

With almost 10 years of experience, Northern California Pomskies values making sure pomsky owners know what to expect when they adopt so each pomsky goes to a safe home.

Why did you want to become a pomsky breeder?

When asked why they wanted to become a pomsky breeder, Northern California Pomskies said:

“I had worked professionally with dogs for over 13 years prior to starting my breeding program. I worked at the SPCA, was the manager of an open play doggie daycare, and I worked in grooming. I was certified in canine behavior and had extensive experience with different breeds, their temperaments and working with people who both showed and bred their dogs. When I had my children, I wanted to stay home with them, but I missed having dogs in my life. Huskies were always my favorite to work with, but I wasn’t sure about how they would be with my young children. I knew they were loving, but I thought their size and exuberant energy may be a bit overwhelming. I looked into spitz breeds, looking for something similar to huskies, but smaller and more manageable. I was not satisfied with the different health concerns or temperaments I came across and just nothing really had that striking look that huskies have. In my search I came across something called a Pomsky. It was exactly what I was looking for, wonderful social temperament, compact size, and the look I was dreaming about. This was in 2013 and at the time Pomskies were extremely rare and only a few people were actually able to breed them. I got in contact with the founder of the Pomsky Club of America, who had high standards and beautiful dogs. The club was very interested in responsible people starting programs to expand the Pomsky gene pool. I was very fortunate to have friends in the canine reproductive community and felt confident I could embark on this journey of starting a Pomsky breeding program. After finding our first beautiful female husky, Tippi, and our adorable Pomeranian male, Spanky, who both had amazing temperaments and fantastic health, we were able to have our first Pomsky litter in August of 2014.”

What trait do you consider the most important when breeding pomsky dogs?

Northern California Pomskies has a saying they often repeat, which is “responsible breeding, responsible ownership”. They believe health and temperament are of the utmost concern in regards to breeding their dogs. The owner of Northern California Pomskies said “I think anyone would agree that they want their pets to be first and foremost healthy and happy, meaning a pleasant companion in their home. After that you can consider appearance and we believe Pomskies should have the appearance of husky, only in miniature, not just the coloring of a husky, but the build and facial features too. After health and temperament, the biggest responsibility a breeder has is securing good, responsible homes for their puppies.”

Northern California Pomskies has an application and video chat interview process. This is how they make sure their puppies will have happy lives and that the families they go to are prepared for the commitment and responsibility involved. Northern California Pomskies has a spay and neuter contract for all of their puppies and their contracts also ensure that none of their puppies will ever end up in a shelter because they remain supportive to all families for the life of each puppy.

What is your favorite part about being a pomsky breeder?

Northern California Pomskies’ favorite part about being a pomsky breeder is seeing the joy their puppies bring people.
