Pomskies stand out as being super cute and fluffy. They have a distinct look that will have people asking you “what type of dog is that?”. This post covers the overall appearance of a pomsky dog including their size, coat types and colors, eyes, and tail.

 Pomsky Size

Pomskies are considered a small to medium dog and typically stand 15-18 inches tall and weigh between 12-35 pounds when they are full grown. A pomsky’s size will vary depending on the size of their mom and dad and which generation of pomsky they are. For example, if a pomsky is an F1 generation, their size will depend on the size of their Husky mom and Pomeranian dad.  The size of an F2 pomsky will be easier to predict, as both of the parents are pomskies and they will produce a pomsky that is the average between their two sizes. Learn more about pomsky generations on our FAQs page. Pomskies are a desirable breed because they have the beauty and colors of a husky but require less maintenance than a large dog. Also, smaller dogs such as pomskies may be allowed in more restrictive residential settings such as condominiums and apartment buildings.

Pomsky Coat

Pomskies have a double layer coat that includes an undercoat and a topcoat. The double coat contributes to a pomsky’s fluffy appearance and needs to be brushed regularly. A pomsky’s fur coat should not be shaved, as it is designed to regulate their body temperature and it could take several months for the coat to grow back to its full length.

There are three main types of pomsky fur coats: a standard coat, plush coat and wooly coat. A standard coat is short and smooth, similar to a husky coat. It is the easiest type of coat to maintain, as the fur can be brushed and blown out more easily than longer fur coats. Other dogs with a similar coat to the standard coat are a corgi or german shepherd.

A plush coat is silkier than the standard coat and the fur grows longer around the ears, face, legs and tail. Since the plush coat is medium length around the face and legs, the grooming process will require more work to brush out and remove your dog’s undercoat. Consequently, a pomsky with a plush coat will need to be brushed more frequently than a pomsky with a standard coat.

The last pomsky coat type is a wooly coat. This coat is the longest and has a dense undercoat. Some breeders believe a wooly coat is the most desirable, as the pomsky will appear fluffier. A pomsky with a wooly coat will have longer fur in the same areas as the plush coat (the ears, neck, face, legs, and tail) and when they sit up right, they will appear to have long fur coming from under their chin all the way down to their chest. The wooly coat will require the most maintenance and grooming, possibly even requiring more than one brush type – one undercoat shedding brush and one slicker brush. However, with regular brushing and removal of the undercoat, your wooly pomsky will look spectacular.

 Coat Color Variations

A pomsky’s coat can come in a variety of colors and variations, depending on what their parents’ fur coats are like. Pomskies may be black, grey, white, red, brown, chocolate or could have features similar to a sable or agouti husky.  Pomskies have a wider variety of coat colors and patterns than their husky counterparts, since the Pomeranian also contributes colors and patterns. Some common husky markings that can be seen in pomskies include piebald, pinto, black points, and splash. A piebald is when the pomsky is more than 50% white with other unique markers. A pinto pomsky will also have a lot of white color mostly on their shoulders, chest, and legs. A pomsky with black points will have black markings around their eyes and nose. The splash marking is similar to a piebald, but this pomsky will have a blanket of color on their back.

Pomsky Eyes

A pomsky’s eyes is one of the features that sets them apart from other dogs. Pomsky eyes are most commonly blue, brown, parti (multicolored eye) or bi-eyed (each eye is a different color). Their eyes can also be amber or green, but these eye colors are more rare. A pomsky with blue eyes is more preferred and will likely cost more than a pomsky with a different color of eyes such as brown or parti.

Pomsky Tail

The pomsky’s tail will appear fluffy and curled over their back. As a pomsky walks, their fluffy tail will bounce behind them. When their tail is up, it curls to make a complete circle or 3/4 of a circle.

Summary

Pomskies can range from having wooly coats to shorter smooth coats in a variety of different color combinations. Their eyes may be piercing blue, simply brown or multi-colored. No matter what color or coat your pomsky has, you can always be sure that your pomsky will be small, energetic and have a fluffy curled tail, which all contributes to their overall beauty.
